The HAGUE – ECIS Conference

The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, provided me with an excellent opportunity for professional development – the ECIS (European Council of International Schools) conference in The Hague, Netherlands. The conference consisted of a pre-conference day established for Counsellors and Admissions personnel (Colleges/Universities) from around the world. There were over 450 participants/delegates from the ECIS membership. The conference was opened by a student performance from The Hague International Youth Choir.

The subsequent three days were for all participants from the general ECIS membership. Overall, the workshops were very informative and interesting. Two keynote speakers stand out for me – Mr. Michael McKay (Flight Director of the European Space Agency), who provided a very informative and visual stimulating presentations, including the use of 3D glasses. The other was HIS royal His Royal Highness Prince Edward who spoke on the International Award Programme. Afterwards, I also happened to be walking down the same hallway, a brief hello exchanged between us.

This was my first trip to The Hague and I found the designs and landscape very European that shows the history of the area. There are many governmental buildings and International Embassies located in the area. The accommodation was a quaint hotel with less than 30 rooms located near the downtown and located on the tram line. As in European style, a breakfast was provided that included CHEESE!

It was enjoyable to spend time in and outside the conference with people from and/or working in an international environment. Connecting and networking is of course, part of the scene. For example, one of my very first contacts happened to be from Canada- Alberta – the Vulcan area, near my home city. I was also able to connect with a friend from Calgary, who currently is teaching in Belgium.

The eating experience was absolutely fabulous as I was able to enjoy many foods that we miss as a family. Sorry children, I ate at Burger King once. The main taste de jour for me was the cheese and pizza, as these do not quite taste the same in Africa. Nachos and spare ribs were another meal and favorite. What surprised me the most was that prices were relatively cheap, even in comparison to Africa.

The transportation system in The Hague is first class and rate. Many people use bikes as transportation followed by the tram, which basically encompasses the city. The entire area is extremely clean and safe.

International News - Mombasa

Mombasa made the international news earlier in November of an attempted hijacking of a cruise ship by PIRATES. Near the coast of Mombasa, a group of pirates attempted to board a cruise ship to no avail. Of concern was that these pirates did not have the traditional swords, but a small missile launcher and other modern weapons. Initial reports theorized that it was an act of terrorism, but it proved unfounded. Mombasa is a major service delivery at the port, but cruise tourists are increasing in its popularity. The government has established a special cruise terminal at Mombasa port for additional safety precautions.

Halloween - Mombasa Style

Celebrating Halloween is not an African tradition. The main two reasons for this are that it is a European/North American tradition as well as the cost for costumes and candy. We went over to a friend’s (Head of School)house and had lots of fun. Costumes ( the Mclean Batman/Ninja family), a treasure hunt for candy, pin the tail on the monkey, and bobbing for apples. A good time had by all.

Kraft Dinner Arrives to Kenya

The McLean family in Kenya has been greatly missing a stable Canadian food - KD. Grampa Bud and MeMe surprised us with a dozen boxes of Kraft Dinner. As we know, the cost to delivery the food was almost 10 times as much as the prices for items. Thanks for putting smiles on the children's faces. Immediately after opeing the parcel, we had 3 boxes for supper. We invited our neighours the following evening for some tastey Krfat Dinner. We are on a weekly rasion as supplies are getting low again. Brenda' parents will be joining us in a few weeks with more KD.
