Jones Departure

The principal of the school, Derek Jones and his family (Karen, Ben, Emily, Alice and Molly left the school to a new position in Peru. The families spent a lot of time together outside of school and will be missed dearly by us.

The school organized a going away party that was very fitting and quite emotionally as a slide show was presented to the family as well as a woodcarving.

We also spent the last few days spending time together as thes efriends will be missed!

Jordan is a Teenager

Jordan turned thirteen on April 15th, Brenda and Scott can not believe that we are parents of a teenager. As a family, we celebrated his birthday at home with some presents and cake. With his friends he went golfing in the morning and then to the water park for the afternoon.

Three faculty (Aziz Bata - Canadian, Naheed Bardai-Canadian, George Killeen-American) have opened up a local coffee shop called Jahazi in Old Town. It is a very quant place with authentic African/Indian drinks and food.

In April the Junior School organized a parent evening – expression session where children will be able to share their talents. Tait was ‘behind the scenes’ as she helped Miss. Kerby (music teacher) with helping arrange the stage and music for the different talents. She also performed a recorder session with other girls in the music club.

Kyle performed a gymnastics/rap moves with 5 other boys from his class. Ty performed a group somg with the Year 1and also rap song about the Junior School with two other year 1 students. Fun was had by all!

Sports Day

There was a Senior School sports day that included athletic and running events. Jordan was involved in a few events including triple long jump and javelin. Although Jordan learned these events in a couple of PE lessons, he won his age division as well as the entire school, including the IB students with his javelin throw.

Kyle's Birthday

Kyle celebrated his 9th birthday in Mombasa style! We had about 16 of his classmates over to the house for fun, games, swimming, football and a treasure hunt that ended in piñata pandemonium. We used a maize paper bag for the piñata.

Kenya Hosts the World

Mombasa hosted the 2007 IAAF Athletics Cross-country run in March. The weather was extremely hot with heat temperatures nearly 38 degrees. The entire run was held at the Mombasa golf club near the ocean. The security has very tight with Kenya police and guards even on horseback and helicopter surveillance.

Jordan and Scott went to the course to see the event. Our friend, Kurt an American said that it was, “better than the Super Bowl.” We were able to see the athletics up close and the crowd was very enthusiastic especially with the Kenya team taking first spot overall. We were so close to the course that we could almost touch teh runners. Jordan had a great time at the event.

Mombasa was very much in a state of beautification before the event. Roads were paved and lines were actually painted on the road. They also constructed road barriers with street lamps, although some are not working 2 weeks later. Citizens of Mombasa and Kenya say that they hope the government spends more money into infrastructure.

February 2007

A special dinner and cake was made to celebrate Valentine’s Day as well as celebrate birthdays (Bapa’s, Jordan’s and Kyle’s) before the grandparents left back to Canada. Scott bought Brenda some African perfume called the Heat - and she thought it smelt like sweaty Feet - oh well - it is the thought that counts!
