Scott's Assembly

A new concept in the Senior School is assembly held by a department. As it was the beginning of the term, the Dean of Students (Karin Clough) and Dean of Faculty (Scott), were assigned to arrange the assembly for second week. Not a lot of time – but it was fun planning. We asked a group of Year 7 and Year 8 students to volunteer their time on this project. The students put together a power point presentation on the following:

UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME (UNEP)

Prince Albert II of Monaco – “The year of the dolphin gives me the opportunity to renew my firm commitment towards protecting marine biodiversity. With this strong initiative we can make a difference to save these fascinating marine mammals from the brink of extinction.”

According to Greek mythology, dolphins are the mediators between gods and men. Dolphins illustrate of the links between culture and nature, cultural and biological diversity, as their life cycle is linked with Man’s culture and behavior. They are the link between air and water and bring man closer to marine life and our precious blue planet.

YOUTH IN ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES

A long-term strategy for encouraging young people in environmental activities and the work of UNEP was called TUNZA. The word derived from eastern Africa “to treat with care and affection.”

Dolphin Facts:

A dolphin’s temperature inside its body is approximately 35 degrees while the outer temperature is usually cooler.

Dolphins usually live up to twenty years old.

Dolphins usually swim in groups or a family called PODS.

A dolphin can hold its breath for 5-8 minutes.

Dolphins are mammals as they have lungs and breathe air.

There are over 26 types of ocean dolphins and 5 river dolphins.

Dolphins are considered a type of whale.

Tait Turns Eleven

Tait turned eleven on September 11. She had a party at the house with 20 school friends. Lots of fun was had by all. This was very interesting, from a parent’s perspective, as both girls and boys were invited. It was interesting to watch the little “crushes” between students.

First Week of Academic Year 2007

The ‘buzz’ was sill on campus after His Highness’ visit for the residential ground breaking that occurred on August 14th, 2007. As described by Mr. Salim Bhatia, “Instead of the “flagship,” one might call the Academy in Mombasa the “leading dhow” in the network. Upon arriving onto the campus after the academic term break, one will notice the amount of work that has taken place in the retro-fit as well as the residence.

A new teacher orientation welcomed faculty to the campus. Information provided allowed teachers to feel more comfortable in their upcoming duties and navigating the campus. Wednesday saw all teachers back at the school for a full day of PD.

The major theme of the day evolved around team building and creating a sense of a whole school learning community. Activities started off with a staff breakfast followed by a small group activity, which supplied a challenging task of creating an apparatus, with minimal supplies, to protect a raw egg that would be dropped from the school balcony. Team work, the competitive spirit and lots of laughs were enthusiastically observed. ‘Great Eggspectations’ and ‘Octo-Egg-le-mont’ were two examples of team names.

Brenda and Scott started the 2007-2008 academic year with new positions. Brenda has moved into the classroom in the Junior School - Year 1; and Scott has assumed a new position in the school - Dean of Faculty.
